Abstract

In addition to the major players in the development of ISO 15926 there are a number of smaller organizations that also have interoperability initiatives.


EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute)

From its website: "The Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. (EPRI) conducts research and development relating to the generation, delivery and use of electricity for the benefit of the public..."

One of EPRI's mandates is to promote cooperation between its members. One aspect of cooperation is the easy interoperability of digital information.

Oil and gas operations in the high north are remote sites, leading to heavy demands on communication. Instrumentation and efficient transfer of real time data between fields and centralized operations is critical to profitable development.

COBIE (Construction Operations Building Information Exchange)

COBIE is primarily concerned with commercial buildings. Its premise is "Why wait till the job is over to start gathering handover information?" The COBIE approach is to start accumulating handover information while the building is still being designed. Using COBIE-compliant commercial software, engineers and constructors can put appropriate documents into the turnover datastore just once, and make reference to it wherever it is needed.

A formal demonstration of the current version of COBIE, COBIE2, is planned for the National Institute of Building Science annual meeting in Washington, DC, in December 2009.

Active Projects

At any given time, FIATECH sponsors a number of projects, many of which have something to do with exchanging information.

Automating Equipment Information Exchange (AEX)

The Automating Equipment Information Exchange (AEX) project is developing XML specifications to automate information exchange for the design, procurement, delivery, operation and maintenance of engineered equipment. The AEX project is part of FIATECH's Roadmap Element 3. It it being developed in conjunction with the IDS-ADI project because of the large overlap between them.

Global Valve Cross-Reference eCatalog (GVCC)

At the beginning of every detailed engineering project, materials engineers have the task of reconciling their internal valve descriptions with those of valve manufacturers. In this project, valve manufacturers are cross-referencing their valves to the descriptions of the Process Industries Practices (PIP) reference valve catalog using FIATECH’s automation equipment information exchange (AEX) XML protocols. The resulting cross-reference tool will be available to project sponsors on a GVCC website. The GVCC web site will enable participating companies to automatically cross-match their internal valve catalogs and technical specifications with their business collaboration partners via a common cross-match to an electronic version of the PIP valve catalog.
