    9 == Abstract ==
     7In the ''Introduction to ISO 15926'' we compare getting started with the standard to the evolution of the creation of web pages for the internet. Fifteen years ago, if you wanted to make a web page you would have had to lean how to code Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) by hand. Nowadays, for a few dollars a month you can use the tools of a service provider and drag and drop widgets to make in a few minutes what would have taken days and weeks.

    11 Many organizations have implemented ISO 15926 at the introductory, or yellow, level and are realizing business benefits today.  At the top end, ISO 15926 is evolving quickly, with new tools and implementation methods being developed, more or less, as we speak.  This section proposes ideas for analyzing the information interoperability needs at your organization and planning the implementation of ISO 15926.
     9Implementation of ISO 15926 is following a similar path. Some of the parts of the standard require some computer programming, and as short a time as two years ago users would have had to write it themselves. Now, however, there are a number of tools which support the various parts of ISO 15926.

    13 ----
    14 The purpose of this section is to give you a roadmap for implementing ISO 15926 at your organization.  Of necessity, the roadmap will not be a single direct route to a single end-point.  This means that you can start with limited goals, say, to map two interacting applications together using ISO 15926 part 4 (15926-4).  Later on you can work up to a full 15926-9 façade.
     11There are a number of approaches to implementing ISO 15926 depending on what you want to achieve and the resources available. In the book we show how the standard can be implemented gradually by a small them from a small organization. In fact, if your organization has ever been involved in moving information directly between to software applications, it probably already employs people with the required skills.

    16 So this section will not be like a route map from your travel agent showing the shortest route from your house to the beach.  Instead it will be more like a roadmap of the entire countryside.  For instance, if you lived in London, England and wanted to go the beach at Cannes, an easy way would be to take the Eurostar to the Gare de Nord train station in Paris, transfer to the Gare de Lyon, then take the ''train'' ''à'' ''grande'' ''vitesse'' (TGV) to Cannes.
     13In the book we explain this in more detail, but basically, start the information exchange project in the same way you normally do. Eventually you will come to a part where you determine that "this database term over here" means the same as "that database term over there". The traditional approach is to create what is called a database map to relate the two together. But instead of mapping the two terms directly together, map each to the appropriate term in Part 4.  As your team learns more about ISO 15926 they can get more sophisticated.

    18 On the other hand, if you channeled Rowan Atkinson and took a side road you would have a much more interesting journey.

    24 == Who Should Consider Implementing ISO 15926 ==
    25
    26 ISO 15926 is a way to transfer information between two computer systems.  Thus, organizations that develop computer systems are the ones that need to implement ISO 15926.  If your organization is a software developer, it is an obvious candidate.  But even if your organization purchases software, it may still be a candidate.  Look at the computer systems your organization uses.  If any of the following three cases exists, you are a candidate for ISO 15926:
    27
    28   * You develop software that obtains input from, and/or sends output to, databases or other computer systems.
    29   * You capture information from a computer system and store it.  The computer system might be commercial software, or might be developed in-house.
    30   * You wish to create a new means of moving information directly between computer systems.
     15A good way to learn more about ISO 15926 is to join FIATECH or the POSC Caesar Association (PCA), join a project or two and attend a few conferences.  There you will meet people who have travelled down this path ahead of you and can help you out.
