Integrated Information Platform

The IIP project makes important contributions toward resolving one of the major challenges on the way towards realization of Integrated Operations (IO); the establishment of a real-time information pipeline, based on open standards, that supports both generations of IO.

Several challenges need to be resolved for Integrated Operations (IO) to become a reality. This project makes important contributions toward resolving one of the major ones; the establishment of a real-time information pipeline, based on open standards, that supports both generations of IO. The project does this through development of:

  • Machine-interpretable terminologies or dictionaries for relevant domains. These form the basis for development of XML schemata for consistent transferral of data between applications in the same domain
  • Taxonomies for multiple domains or combination of data across domains
  • Complete ontologies supporting automated reasoning or inference of data using logical rules

The methodology used in the project is:

  1. Identify relevant domain information
  2. Model and integrate the information by the use of ISO 15926 part 2 and 4.
  3. Based on the ISO 15926 models, develop exchange formats based on XML schema for exchange of information between major stakeholders in the industry, including licence operators, license partners, vendors and regulatory bodies.

The following domains are addressed: Drilling, Well production, Safety and automation systems, Subsea production equipment, Condition Based Monitoring and Health, Safety & Environment (HSE).Two departments at The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) are involved in the project. These are: The Department of Computer and Information Science and the Department of Petroleum Engineering and Applied Geophysics (and 2 PhD students and one research fellow) Research topics addressed in the project are:

  1. To develop techniques for classifying and retrieving information using OWL ontological descriptions
  2. Optimal ways to structure subsurface real time data for visualization and decision support
